Yesterday, many fans were debating which Seminole would go off the board first. Arguably, Timmy Jernigan was the best player available. But as the Cleveland Browns showed us, the draft is not an exact science. Sometimes you take a gamble on a player you think will be better for your organization down the road than one you know is better right now.
And then we saw the St. Louis Rams trade up in the second round to select our favorite, Lamarcus Joyner.
Joyner's remarks following his selection embody why he is so successful and so loved.
Joyner: "If I've got to pack on 100 pounds to move to offensive guard, I'll do whatever I can to help the organization." #RamsDraft— St. Louis Rams (@STLouisRams) May 10, 2014
Joyner, first and foremost, is a football player. Jimbo Fisher asked Joyner to do many things over the course of his career and Joyner did all of them professionally and well.
But Joyner kept saying all the right things last night.
Joyner: "I'm going to make the guy across the line from me quit before I do." #RamsDraft— St. Louis Rams (@STLouisRams) May 10, 2014
I don't think we quite realize the impact that Joyner leaving will have on this program. It is really hard to find someone with Joyner's talent and maturity. And for the Rams to sacrifice a 5th rounder to move up three spots, they knew they had something special in Joyner and needed to pull the trigger. Congratulations Lamarcus, we are very proud today.
