After what looked like a disaster in January, FSU's recruiting pipeline is now flowing again, thanks to former Minnesota head coach Tim Brewster. Wednesday Brewster, who besides heading up recruiting coaches tight ends, met with the media and Nole fans have gotta love the guy's winning attitude
"I was at North Carolina with Mack Brown for nine years from 1989-1997, and one team we never beat was Florida State. We had some tremendous battles. It’s a special place. And I have a tremendous respect for the tradition and history of college football, and this is one of the best. When you have an opportunity to join one of the great programs in college football, it’s an exciting opportunity.
Jimbo Fisher offered me an opportunity to be a part of a program that has a chance to win a national championship. That’s why I’m here.I’m not bashful. I’m extremely proud of the university that I represent. We know at Florida State University, one of the things we have to do is win the state of Florida. We need to beat Miami. We need to beat the University of Florida. That is vitally important to us.
We are going to take an extremely aggressive approach to getting the best players in the state of Florida to come to Tallahassee. We are going to recruit relentlessly. We are going to coach relentlessly. … We have nine outstanding coaches and nine outstanding recruiters.
Here at Florida State, it’s truly a national name. when you talk about that gold helmet with the spear on the side, kids know that brand. And it gives us an entry to kids across America. The most important aspect of what we have to do at Florida State is do a great job of evaluation. Absolutely taking the best kids first and foremost in the state of Florida and then in our areas where we know people. I’m going to recruit Miami, and then I’m going to go into the state of Texas. And I’m going to go to California. I’m going to recruit nationally some of the best players in the country. And our whole staff is going to do that.
Jimbo Fisher is relentless and I absolutely love it. He spends the time necessary to do a good job recruiting. And that’s something that is very exciting to me. We think we’re all good coaches. But I’m going to be a better coach when I get great players.
Nick O'Leary is a guy that has tremendous talent. He needs to understand that the details of the game are very important. It's not about the big picture. It's about seeing the little picture. ... Teaching him to be a student of the game, to totally understand what the defense is trying to do so that you can react instinctively as a tight end.
Cristo (Kourtzidis) is another kid who has some athletic ability. Got to get bigger, got to get stronger in the run game. Has some natural instincts in the passing game. Need for him to be better on the line of scrimmage.
(Kevin) Haplea has a little thump to him. He is a guy that can become a “post player.” A guy that can dominate on the line of scrimmage. One thing we are going to do is run the football. A key ingredient in running the football well is tight end play."
